Kockums builds the world's largest dock

In order to increase its efficiency, Kockums took the decision in 1966 to construct the world's largest dock. This was 405 metres long and 75 metres wide, and cost approximately SEK 100 million. This would make it possible for the company to build vessels of up to 700,000 tonnes, and also to build two vessels simultaneously.

By this time, shipbuilding technology had developed to sectional construction, which meant that the hull was lifted into place using enormous cranes. Co-operation with the Karlskrona shipyard also increased in the 60s.

The filling in of the Sound continued through the end of the 60s until the mid 70s, although on a smaller scale. On the map from 1965, the boundary lies east of Östra Varvsgatan and the filled area in the west is today's Fritiden and part of Scaniaparken/Bo01.
