Today, Malmö and Västra Hamnen are still the principal centre for Kockums with a concentration on construction and development work in close collaboration with the University and colleges. A number of the premises here are unoccupied.
Production consists of wind power stations, railway carriages and subcontract work. Celsius owns the area south of Stora Varvsgatan. Today, the former Saab factory is once more the object of extensive conversion work as it now undergoes the process of transformation to turn it into premises for offices, exhibitions, commerce and education.
When the housing exhibition moved from Limhamn to Västra Hamnen, the first step was taken in transforming this district by constructing housing by the sea. This was a very important strategic decision. The permanent area now consists of some 350 to 400 apartments. After the housing expo has finished, more housing will be built in the exhibition area.
It was decided in connection with Malmö City's vision project in 1994/95 to locate Malmö University in Västra Hamnen. This vision was realised the year after. It was a deliberate, strategic localisation in one of the city's most attractive seaside areas - Universitetsholmen.
