Malmö is known as the city of parks. Pildammsparken, Slottsparken, Kungsparken and Ribersborgsparken are examples of almost legendary parks in our city. They have now been joined by two completely new ones: Daniaparken and Ankarparken in Västra Hamnen. Architects from Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Spain were invited to submit their proposals for the designs of these parks. The objective was to create parks that would have great public appeal. Everybody who lives in Malmö should have good reason to enjoy recreational activities in the new Västra Hamnen district.
Furthermore, these parks had to be linked to the theme of the exhibition: sustainability. The quality programme of the Bo01 housing expo formed the basis for the design proposals. The same conditions applied when Malmö City invited architects to send in proposals as to how the sea fronts, streets and squares should be given shape. This should be transformed into such an attractive environment that people from the whole region will want to come here for the sheer pleasure of a walk or stroll.
