The vision of transforming the dock area into a new city district in Malmö, of creating a city within a city, has resulted in the development of a clear structure with an austere design. The fact that street planning has a rational east-west orientation has meant that old and new buildings have been incorporated into the body of the district, allowing for great accessibility and distinct patterns of movement. The design of the city also creates great versatility, which is essential for the gradual expansion of the district, and a general applicability, which is necessary to satisfy the demands on new and mixed functions.
The various parts and the district as a whole
The Docks district is composed of the following components: the district's units; the neighbourhood units, which open onto the green and blue docks; green and blue docks; public parks and harbour areas; avenues of trees; an east-west city structure with tree-lined streets. These are the common elements that make up the structure and design of the district.
District's units
The building design of the dock consists of units. These act as delimiting units when the dock is being developed. Each unit has five floors, as well as a penthouse. The unit stands on a semi-sunk underground car park. The units are grouped around the green and blue docks, and form the local neighbourhood. Each unit opens onto its blue or green dock and the other three sides slope at varying degrees around their courtyard. The units take on many different guises, but they adhere to the rules of the detailed plan and quality program in terms of light conditions, construction volumes and vegetation.
