Universitetsholmen
Universitetsholmen is the largest of the two development areas for the new Malmö University. The other area is closely linked to the University Hospital, MAS. The first stage of development was at the start of the 1997-1998 term and involved new building and reconstruction work on the blocks Gäddan and Trollhättan .
As well as lecture rooms, a temporary library was also built in part of the Trollhättan block. Back in 1996, an international competition was held for proposals from architects for the development of Hjälmarekajen and part of Beijerskajen. In the opinion of the jury, the winning proposal was robust and pure in design and also made allowances for integration.
This proposal has been modified somewhat at the request of the local authorities. The building has been divided up into a number of sections to overcome the problems with the shell. The lecture rooms in the Orkanen block, as that part of the block on Hjälmarekajen is called, is intended for use by the teachers training college.
The plans of the present proposal include a library on the two upper floors. The total area of the building is approx. 35,000 sq m and consists of five or six floors. It was made of steel, glass and concrete. The construction costs were estimated at some SEK 500 million and the preliminary start-date was 2002 with inauguration in 2004.
