Focus on Nordic Contemporary Art
Malmo Art Museum purchases more artworks than any other museum in Sweden. In the course of the past fifteen years it has assembled the largest collection of Nordic contemporary art in Scandinavia.
Founded in 1841,Malmö Art Museum is one of the leading art museums in Scandinavia. The museum building from 1937 is situated in the Malmöhus castle complex, one of the oldest remaining renaissance castle in Scandinavia. Malmö Art Museum is governed by the city of Malmö.
The Collections
The Malmö Art Museum collection now contains of about 32,000 works, covering the period from the 16th century to the present day. Most of Scandinavia's innovative and highly distinguished artists are represented at Malmö Art Museum.
The museum hosts several important collections and historical donations, including the works of Carl Fredrik Hill (1849-1911) whose pictures still evoke challenging thoughts on the human mind. The Herman Gotthardt collection
of Nordic modern 20th century art is a highly important contribution to the understanding of the early production of Scandinavian modern art. Also in the museum´s holdings is a unique collection of Russian fin-de-siècle paintings, acquired at the famous Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in 1914.
Today Malmo Art Museum purchases more artworks than any other museum in Sweden. In the course of the past fifteen years it has assembled the largest collection of Nordic contemporary art in Scandinavia, about 3,400 works.
The Museum also has an extensive collection of furniture and handicraft, primarily from southern Sweden.
As well as offering a retrospective, the museum´s exhibitions reflect current developments on the contemporary art scene both from the Nordic countries and the international scene. The museum aims to give its visitor art that explore, define, comment and criticise both our history and our contemporary life. A visit to the museum should be an intellectual, aesthetic and emotional challenge, based on quality, insight and application that give a new perspective to the visitor´s life.
Educational activities at the museum include guided tours, school programs and seminars.

From Ming to Mao
An exhibition with a porcelain treasure that never left China
The Chinese porcelain - the white gold - has aroused great admiration in Europe for centuries. Malmö Art Museum now presents more than 50 porcelain objects from the collection of Capital Museum in Beijing that has never been shown outside China. This porcelain was never meant for export. The porcelain is from the periods of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and from the ChineseRepublic (1914-1948). The exhibition is made in collaboration with the Capital Museum in Beijing.

With another glance - Modernism
An art exhibition that explores the period of modernism (1880-1940) through mainly artists from Scania.

Matts Leiderstam - Seen from Here
Matts Leiderstam has since the early 1990s paired art history with various contemporary issues. This mid-career exhibition is focused on his interest for the Düsseldorf painters.

Lisa Jeannin & Rolf Schuurmans
The artists Lisa Jeannin, born 1972 in Sweden , and Rolf Schuurmans, born 1972 in Holland, have during several years collaborated. Their art lies often in between reality and fable, seriousness and absurd humour.

Permanent exhibition - Highlights from the collection
From 1500 until Now
A stroll through time and space outlining the history and development of painting and furniture styles. Interiors that are part of the permanent exhibition illustrate the various style periods, from the Renaissance to Postmodernism. Especially noteworthy are the portraits of Rococo painter Alexander Roslin, Carl Fredrik Hill´s famous landscapes from 1870s and, of course, Nordic contemporary art.
