Housing and building
During the last 150 years - the time of industrialism - Malmö has grew much. People have come to the city from the countryside, and from other countries, in search for work. New modern houses and residential areas have been built for new and old inhabitants of Malmö. Old areas have been torn down - some of them missed others not. In the new Malmö residential areas are built near the sea.
Leisure and entertainment
The factories of the 20th century gave work to many women, men and children. Simultaneously issues concerning working hours, safety and better salaries was pushed forward. And sure enough it has become better. It started with two weeks holiday. The day was divided into worktime and freetime. A number of different societies started to pop up within sports, gardening, music, cinema and swimming just to mention a few. “Folkets park", “Ribban" and the dance restaurant "Amiralen" attracted many people in Malmö on their freetime. But many people had no freetime.
Industy and work
“City of all times" tells the story about the time when Malmö was transformed from being one of the largest cities of trade inScandinavia to become the biggest city of industry. A city with tobacco production, textile industry, cement manufacuring, shipping docks, power and hunger, child labour, strikes and riots. It concerns factory closures, and the new Malmö. It concerns women and men. It concerns mutual agreement and resistance, hard work and pleasure.
Mutual agreement and resistance
In a government decision from 1974 the decision was taken that all public power should come from the people. But it hasn´t always been like that. It wasn´t until 1921 that the right to vote was brought in. Before that a large part of the Swedish population were outside of the political process and had very few possibilities to influence development. In Malmö there was “the Malmö spirit" - but what did that mean? How were the decisions concerning the future of Malmö to be made?
Transport and communication
In order for a city to grow good communications are needed. In the early days Malmö had fast searouts and an expanding harbour. In the middle of the 19th century the train system came and this improved transport over land and it changed the landscape and time. All of Sweden had the same time. The tram system was taken away and was replaced by cars, soon every man or woman´s possession. The Öresund bridge and the city tunnel bring Malmö even closer.
Vision and reality
How has Malmö become the city it is today? Who decided? Who made the plans? What was the outcome? Who decides what Malmö is going to look like in the future?
